Common Volvo Problems We Fix
Here are the Volvo problems we see most often, what you'll notice first, and what we do about each one.
Oil Burning and Oil Leaks
Burning oil. You're adding oil between oil changes, or the low oil light comes on. It's most common on 2013 to 2016 S60, V60, XC60, XC70 and XC90 models. We measure how much oil the engine uses, check for leaks first, and walk you through your repair options.
Oil leaks and a whistle at idle. Oil leaking from around the dipstick, a whistle or moan from the engine at idle, or smoke on turbo models. On 1995 to 2005 five-cylinder Volvos, the system that vents pressure out of the engine clogs up, and the pressure pushes oil out wherever it can. We replace that vent system so the leaks stop.
Timing Belts and Cooling
Timing belt due. Most five-cylinder Volvos, including the S60, V70, XC70 and XC90, use a timing belt. We recommend replacing it at 80,000 to 100,000 miles or 10 years. If it breaks, the engine can be badly damaged. We do the timing belt replacement and the water pump at the same visit to save you labor.
Temperature warning or weak heat. A check engine light, a temperature warning, or poor heat in winter. We see it on 2015 S60 models and on 2018 to 2019 XC60, S60, S90 and XC90 plug-in hybrids, where the thermostat can fail. We check the codes with Volvo's own software and repair the cooling system with Volvo parts.
Rough Shifting
Hard shifts when slowing down. A rough shift or clunk as you slow down, most common on 2005 to 2013 S60, S80, XC60, XC70 and XC90 models. Often a Volvo software update smooths it out. We check the transmission's software with Volvo's own tools before any parts are replaced.
Hard or slow shifts when cold. Volvo says the transmission fluid lasts the life of the car, but it really wears out. Old fluid causes hard or slow shifts, mostly when the car is cold. We service the transmission with the correct Volvo fluid to keep it shifting smoothly.
