Common Honda Problems We Fix
Here are the Honda problems we see most often, what you'll notice first, and what we do about each one.
Oil Burning and Oil Problems
Burning oil and misfires. A shaky engine, oil burning between changes, and spark plugs that wear out early on 2008 to 2013 Accord V6, Odyssey, Pilot and Crosstour models. A fuel-saving feature that shuts off cylinders is a common cause. We check the spark plugs, measure oil use and fix the cause.
Oil that smells like gas. The oil level goes up instead of down and smells like gas, with rough running or stalling in cold weather, on 2016 to 2018 Civic and 2017 to 2018 CR-V models with the 1.5 turbo. Utah winters make it worse. We check the oil and make sure the engine has Honda's latest software.
Rough Shifting
Rough or delayed shifts. Rough or slow shifts, jerking or surging on 2016 and newer Pilot, Odyssey, Passport and Ridgeline models with the nine-speed automatic. Often a Honda software update and fresh fluid fix it. We check the transmission and its software before any parts are replaced.
Worn-out transmission fluid. Honda minivans and SUVs that tow or sit in summer traffic wear out their transmission fluid faster, and shifting problems start or come back. Changing the fluid when your Maintenance Minder asks keeps the transmission healthy. We service the transmission with Honda's fluid.
AC Leaks and Timing Belts
AC blowing warm. The air conditioning slowly stops blowing cold on 2016 to 2021 Civics. The part at the front of the car that cools the refrigerant can crack and leak. Honda covered some of these repairs, so we'll help you check before you pay. We find the leak and repair the AC.
Timing belt due. The V6 in the Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and Passport uses a timing belt that needs replacing at about 90,000 to 105,000 miles. If it breaks, the engine can be badly damaged. We replace the belt and the water pump at the same visit to save you labor.
