Common Lexus Problems We Fix
Lexus vehicles last a long time, but a few problems come up again and again. Here's what we see most, what you'll notice first, and what we do about it.
Oil Leaks and Rough Idle
Oil leak at the front of the engine. An oil leak, an odd engine noise, or the oil pressure light on 2007 to 2008 ES 350 and 2007 to 2009 RX 350 models. Part of an oil line was made of rubber, and it breaks down with age. If it bursts, the engine can lose oil fast. We check the line and replace it with the updated metal part if yours was never done.
Rough idle and warning lights. A rough idle, surging, and the check engine and VSC lights on 2006 to 2013 IS 250 and 2006 GS 300 models. Carbon slowly builds up inside the engine where fuel can't wash it away. We take apart the top of the engine and clean it out, which brings back a smooth idle.
Water Pumps and Coolant Leaks
Coolant leaks on the V6. A faint coolant smell, crusty pink residue under the engine, or a coolant level that keeps dropping on the ES 350 and RX 350. It's usually the water pump or a small seep from the engine. We test the cooling system to find out which, so you only fix what's needed.
IS water pump leak. Coolant dripping under the front of the engine on 2006 to 2013 IS 250 and IS 350 models, often between 50,000 and 70,000 miles. We replace the water pump and refill with Lexus long-life coolant.
Hybrids and Sticky Dashboards
Hybrid warning light. A hybrid system warning, less electric-only driving, or the gas engine running more than it used to. Newer Lexus hybrid batteries have a long factory warranty, so we'll help you check that first. We run a full hybrid system check with Lexus's own software.
Sticky or melting dashboard. The top of the dash turns soft, shiny and sticky in the sun on some 2003 to 2009 ES, GX, IS, LS and RX models. Lexus replaced many of these for free, so ask a Lexus dealer if yours still qualifies. If it doesn't, we'll talk you through your options.
