Common Mini Problems We Fix
Here are the Mini problems we see most often, what you'll notice first, and what we do about each one.
Timing Chain Rattle and Oil Leaks
Rattle on a cold start. A loud rattle at startup, worst when the engine is cold, mainly on 2007 to 2012 Cooper S and John Cooper Works models. The part that keeps the timing chain tight is weak, so the chain slaps around inside the engine. We check the chain parts and tell you exactly what's worn.
Oil leaks. A burning oil smell after highway driving, drips on the driveway, or a low oil warning. On higher-mileage Minis, worn engine gaskets and seals are the usual cause. Left alone, the engine can run low on oil. We find the exact source and repair it.
Cooling and Fuel Problems
Coolant leaks. A sweet smell after parking, a puddle under the front, a temperature gauge that moves around, or weak heat, common on 2007 to 2016 Coopers and Clubmans. Plastic cooling parts crack with age, and water pumps wear too. We repair the water pump and cooling system and refill with the right coolant.
Surging and hard starts. The engine surges, starts hard when cold, or runs rough with a check engine light, most often on 2007 to 2009 Cooper S models. A worn fuel pump is a common cause. We test the fuel pressure first, then replace the fuel pump only if it's the problem.
Transmission and Steering
Automatic transmission trouble. Slipping, jerking or a car that won't move, mostly on 2002 to 2008 Coopers with the early automatic. These transmissions had a high failure rate. We check how yours drives and what it needs before any big repair, and service the transmission when it can be saved.
Whining and heavy steering. A whine that gets louder as you drive, steering that feels heavy at low speed, or a steering warning light, common on 2002 to 2015 Coopers. The power steering pump overheats and wears out. We replace the pump and its cooling fan together when needed.
